About Patellidae
The size of limpet shells varies considerably, from approximately 2mm to 355mm. The largest known limpet is Scutellastra mexicana that can reach 355 mm.
Whilst the exterior of the shell can be eroded, the inside of the shell is glossy and often very attractively coloured. Patella shells are commonly found empty on the beach and are popular with shell collectors.
