Volutidae
Volutidae, common name volutes, are a taxonomic family of predatory marine gastropods that range in size from 9 mm to over 550 mm. Melo amphora is the largest of the volutes. About Volutidae
Volutes are distinguished by their distinctively marked spiral shells (to which the family name refers, voluta meaning "scroll" in Latin). The elaborate decorations of many of the shells from tropical waters has made them popular collectors' items, with the Junonia Volute from Florida, Scaphella junonia, being prized by beachcombers and serious shell collectors alike. Australian waters boast a very wide variety of beautiful volute species.
